ACTION ALERT! How You Can Help With IP 43 (To Regulate Sales of Assault Weapons in Oregon)
Dear Oregon League members,
WHAT’S HAPPENING ON IP 43?
Initiative Petition #43 (IP 43), which would regulate the future sale or transfer of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in Oregon, was filed for the November 2018 Election by a group of Portland clergy members in reaction to the Parkland shooting. A large coalition of IP 43 advocates, called Lift Every Voice, is holding a series of training sessions around the state for volunteer signature gatherers. Because the timeline is extremely tight, the LWVOR Board has voted to support IP 43 during the signature gathering process and urges members to participate.
On May 23, IP 43 was given a certified ballot title, but this title will most likely be appealed to the Oregon Supreme Court before the June 6 appeal deadline. The appeal process is generally months-long, but there’s a chance there may be a brief window of time in late June to gather the required 88,164 signatures before the July 6 deadline. If this happens, volunteers are urged to be ready to spring into action. A list of in-person trainings is provided below and on the Lift Every Voice website.
