ACTION ALERT: Urge a “NO” Vote on H.R. 38!
Date: November 29, 2017
To: All League Members
From: Norman Turrill, LWVOR President; Marge Easley, LWVOR Gun Safety Portfolio
Contact your U.S. House representative to urge a “no” vote on H.R. 38, Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017
H.R. 38 is set to begin moving in the House TODAY, November 29. This legislation would federally mandate the carrying of concealed firearms in every U.S. state, pre-empting any state laws that have a more restrictive stance on the concealed carry of firearms. This would mean that Oregon would be forced to recognize concealed handgun licenses from all other states, including those with very minimal or no requirements.
The League opposes H.R. 38, stating that it is bad for law enforcement, public safety, and a threat to our democracy. On November 28, the League of Women Voters of the United States sent a memo to the U.S. House of Representatives that outlines the reasons for opposing H.R. 38, the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017.
Please take the time to read this memo. Then contact your Congressional representative (look up contact info here) to let them know why passage of H.R. 38 would be a major health and safety threat to our country.
